We hope last week’s study blessed you. This week we will be taking a look at “SIN”. What is it? And what effect does it have on us as individuals and also as a species. It has always been a sobering thought that EVERY SINGLE act of wickedness EVER done; weather rape, child abuse, murder, genocide, torture and the countless other terrible things we as humans have done and continue to do to each other, is all the result of ONE SINGLE act of SIN. We are all living in the ripple effect of just ONE sin. This should cause us to never look at our sin as a small thing. There are consequences to every sin that will ripple through out time and the effects will be felt in eternity. We need to pray that the Lord helps us keep this perspective as we journey through life. There is NO SMALL SIN…. Only small people who make BIG messes of a beautiful world God made for us to enjoy. BIBLE READING: We are going to be reading through the entire bible over the course of this year. We encourage you all to join us. In order to complete the bible in a full year you will need to read at LEAST 3 chapters a day. We suggest that as you do this you make notes about the things that minister to you or also any questions you may have. This will help you be able to reflect and do research to help further your biblical education.HOG MOB MINISTRIES
PURPLE BOOK CHAPTER 1 – LESSON 2THE RESULT OF SIN:The act of disobeying God is called “sin”. One definition of sin is to “miss the mark”, as when you fail to hit a target in a sporting event.Obviously the Bible’s understanding of sin is much more serious than that. , In fact, Scripture has a couple of different ways of expressing this idea. Sin is sometimes decried as a “trespass”, something that involves crossing forbidden lines or boundaries that God has set up for our protection. The concept of “iniquity” speaks of sin’s most troubling and destructive result: to twist and pervert our inner nature. This is gravely serious because the Bible said God’s nature is “holy”- that is, completely free from evil or defect, absolutely pure in love and goodness.in·iq·ui·ty [ih-nik-wi-tee] 1. gross injustice or wickedness.2. a violation of right or duty; wicked act; sin. 1. What state does the Bible describe us as being in? (Ephesians 2:1)2. Why ultimately is our sin so serious to God? (Leviticus 11:44) 3. What does iniquity do to our relationship with God? (Isaiah 59:1-2) 4. Describe sinful humanities desperate condition: (Romans 3:9-20, 23) 5. Describe the impact sin has on our heart: (Jeremiah 17:9) 6. What are the “wages” of sin? (Romans 6:23) 7. What does the Bible say happens after we die? (Hebrews 9:27)8. How does the Bible describe eternal judgement?matt. 25:41 rev. 20:11-15 rev. 21:89. What does Paul, the writer of Romans, call himself? (Romans &:24)In Romans 7 Paul describes his own state and cries out on behalf of all humanity with the most important question ever asked: “who will rescue me from this body of death?” Humanities deepest need is for salvation – not just from the evil in the world, but from the evil in our own hearts.APPLICATION AND REFLECTION:Obviously God takes sin very seriously, what about you? What do you think you deserve for your sin?John Piper – sermon on “SIN”
Thank all of you for singing up to receive weekly studies from our ministry. Over the course of time we will be going through many studies on various different topics as well as checking out articles and even videos that we believe are relevant, thought provoking and also edifying for todays believer. Some will be material that we have put together as a ministry, others will be things that other ministers and ministries have created, and some will be a combination of the 2. We are still working on a full year’s curriculum and we hope when it is finished you will all join us in taking it as a educational coarse. Until then we would like to start as a ministry by helping to lay a solid biblical foundation that we encourage you to build upon in your own time.
For this first week we will begin diving into a study book that HOG MOB has been using for years with much success. The “PURPLE BOOK”. The “PURPLE BOOK” is used all over the world in small group and discipleship studies. Each week we will study a lesson from this book in the hopes that you will gain from it as well as use the knowledge God brings to teach others more and more about the Gospel. We will be sending out weekly studies every Monday and we hope you participate in them as much as possible. We have much more to come so stay with us and thank you again for your time and support. SIN and SALVATION: CHAPTER 1″In the beginning YHWH created the heavens and the earth…… Through HIM all things were made; without HIM nothing was made that has been made…….. All things have been created through HIM and for HIM.” – Genesis 1:1; John !:3; Colossians 1:16 (TNIV)the Earth, humanity – all we see around us – had a beginning.YHWH declared each phase of creation “good” until He created the first man, Adam, and said it was “not good” for him to be alone. So Eve, the first woman, was created, and the original couple was given everything to enjoy. They were only forbidden to eat the fruit on ONe tree. “the tree of the knowledge of good and evil.”The fatal decision that followed and its tragic results have affected all of human history. humanity would pass down this fatal flaw, this inner corruption, from generation to generation. the power of evil and darkness would have prevailed except for YHWH’s intervention. His plan of salvation and deliverance from evils power began to unfold in the very Garden of Eden. This “Gospel” of salvation is the primary story of the entire Bible.LESSON 1: 1. what was creation like in the beginning? Genesis 1 v. 10 v. 12 v. 18 v. 21 v. 25 2. how many commands did YHWH give Adam and Eve? Genesis 2:173. what was YHWHs command to the first human beings? Genesis 2:16-17Read Genesis 3:1-13 and find out what happened next. 4. how did Adam and Eve respond to YHWHs command? Genesis 3:6-75. in light of this, do you think you would have responded differently? (before you answer, consider your life now. have you obeyed all Gods commands in your life?)note: Think about what YHWH attempted to shield Adam and Eve from: the knowledge of good and evil. As a loving parent, YHWH attempted to shield us from hazardous information and material. Our rebellion caused our destruction.6. Who tempted Eve? Genesis 3:1Adam and Eve ate the forbidden fruit- in essence saying to God, “we don’t need your rules.” they disobeyed God. They sinned.7. How did Adam and Eve react when their eyes were opened and they realized they were naked? v. 7v. 8 v. 108. Why do you think they reacted this way?9. How did God respond to Adam and Eve’s sin? Genesis 3:8-9notice the two very different responses to mans sin: a. humanity covered up in fear and shame and hid from God.b. God in grace, love and sovereignty sought out man.Things have not changed at all since the beginning. after thousands of years and billions of people, humanity still hides from God. and God still seeks his people. this is the starting point to understanding the gospel of salvation.Application and reflectionwhat did you learn from this lesson?how will you apply this knowledge to your life?
We hope this video helps to educate and encourage you as we look at the 6 day account of Gods creation.
